Digital Waste Transfer Notes Compliance Checklist
A month-by-month guide to prepare your skip hire business for Defra's mandatory digital waste tracking deadline in October 2026. Follow this checklist to ensure you're compliant — not scrambling at the last minute.
What is changing?
Paper waste transfer notes are being replaced
The UK government, through Defra (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs), is introducing the Digital Waste Tracking Service. From October 2026, all waste carriers — including skip hire operators — must create, sign, and store waste transfer notes digitally.
Paper-based waste transfer notes will no longer be accepted. Operators who fail to comply risk fines, enforcement action, and potential suspension of their waste carrier licence.
This checklist gives you a clear, step-by-step timeline to transition from paper to digital waste transfer notes, so you're ready well before the deadline.
